Light Rail Expansion Set To Transform Sydney
By Jun Kurosawa

Construction will soon be underway on the $1.6 billion CBD and South East Light Rail (CSELR) that will extend from Circular Quay along George Street to Central Station, through Surry Hills and Moore Park, then on to Kingsford and Randwick.

The CSELR project is expected to transform Sydney, provide improved public transport between the CBD and the South East and deliver over $4 billion in economic benefits. The new 12km route and preparations for major construction of the light rail are due to begin in 2015 with completion due in 2019/2020.

The benefits of the Light rail is that it will offer frequent, fast, reliable light rail services and will improve public transport access to Central, the CBD and major destinations in the south east, including Moore Park and University of NSW.

There is current discussion with no definitive plans in regards to the extension of the rail service to Maroubra. Should the decision go ahead to extend the light rail to Maroubra, this would provide capital benefits to those that purchased property in the region and along Anzac Parade, with property prices expected to rise as buyers are prepared to pay more for access to services and improved public transport options. For now, the new bus/light rail interchange at Kingsford and Randwick will link with these regions.
